Tonic chronic seizure

It is a convulsive seizure with loss of consciousness , muscle stiffening followed by jerking movements.

Seizure with Impaired Awareness

It is a non-convulsive seizure with outward signs of confusion, unresponsiveness or inappropriate behavior.

Nursing care

  • Keep calm and reassure other people who may be nearby.
  • Do not restrain the person, stop jerking or put anything in the mouth during seizure.
  • Note the time the seizure started and and the end of seizure.
  • Protect the head and use pillow or cushion to support the head.
  • Turn the person gently to side lying position. This will help to keep the airway clear.
  • Do not try to force the mouth open with any hard objects or finger. A person having a seizure cannot swallow his tongue. Efforts to hold the tongue down can injure teeth or jaw.
  • Remove any harm or hazardous object near patient  that may cause injury.
  • Do not attempt artificial respiration (mouth to mouth breaths, CPR) except in the unlikely event that a person does not start breathing again after the seizure has stopped.. People usually start breathing again on their own after seizure.
  • Loosen ties or anything around the neck that may make it hard to breath.
  • Remove eye glasses.
  • Monitor vital signs.
  • Talk to the person to make sure the person has regained full consciousness.
  • Reassure and re-orient the patient.
  • Do not offer the person water or food until he/she is fully alert.
  • Stay with the person during the time of seizure and until they have recovered.
